We are not born with beliefs but we acquire them from our environment, school, religion, books, tv, our parents…and our parents from their parents and so on. This makes me wonder how old our beliefs are and how relevant to the present moment. It may come as a surprise but a set of beliefs varies from family to family, culture to culture, country to country..and they are powerful. Oh so powerful.
Lets take a thorough look at our lives and we’ll feel this power by witnessing the results in our own, individual reality. If the outcome is negative, then our beliefs might be limiting us from living a life full of opportunities, experiences, equality, self-development. If the outcome if positive, then we are the persons who challenge old limiting beliefs, the ones who move forward by accepting differences, embracing individuality, allowing space for different views and ultimately changing what is an obstacle to growth and knowledge. OUR truth of how things are or should be, belongs to OUR set of beliefs and eventually creates OUR personal reality. I deliberately capitalised “our” as it is very common to perceive that OUR beliefs are the ultimate truth and there is no question about it. But where is the evidence? Probably a reference to an experience personal or not that tends to validate our thinking and OUR belief. “But I know it’s true” says our inner lawyer who wants to justify every single thought proving ourselves right. Everyone experiences life differently and our perception of it is clearly manipulated during our childhood when all information is received and stored in our brain cells. Therefore we create our lives based on what we have been told that it true and connecting a couple of incidents to back us up. But is it true for everyone else? Do we share the same childhood or adulthood? How is your experience the same as mine? What makes it unique? How open are we to explore a new understanding of how things work in life? Ghandi’s quote is very relevant and very powerful as it describes a process in which our individual reality stems from our belief system. He said that: ” Our beliefs become our thoughts, our thoughts become our words, our words become our actions, our actions become our habits, our habits become our values, our values become our destiny” If we challenge and change a piece of this puzzle then everything will change and we will have created something new, a new reality. Negative beliefs will create a negative reality, we will be attracting everything we believe is true, we will be surrounded with people with similar beliefs and thoughts, developing our own conclusion and naming it according to what we think is right. This eventually will lead to a toxic, unhealthy life where everything that is happening outside of us will have a negative impact to our mind, body and soul. Similarly a positive thought will lead to a positive attitude. First we need to have a closer look at us, go deeper within, find the source of an unbalanced life and reverse the belief that we own. It’s not easy, yet it is possible. Choose love instead of hate, choose kindness instead of intolerance, choose understanding instead of ignorance, choose embracing instead of rejecting.
